Eagles trade
Derrick Henry (TEN- RB) $1,796,000 (2021)
Patriots trade
Danny Woodhead (RB-SDC) $937,500 (2019)
Markus Wheaton (WR - CHI) $994,000 (2017)
John Simon (LB-IND) $540,000 (2018)
I vetoed this trade not only because of its inequity, which should be apparent, but also because it exploits a potential weakness among certain GM's to the detriment of their team.
Eagles finished 3-9 last season! They boast a 17-46 all time league record overall...
Henry was a 1st round selection by the Eagles last year (11th overall I believe). Even playing behind a top back in Murray he has performed relatively well, finishing at the number 44 in points and 6oth at ppg (9.2) among all RB's. Personally, I think that's impressive and bids well for his future.
Opposite Eagles are the Patriots, undefeated for two seasons in a row and 63-10 overall league record.
Now I can't take anything away from these two GM's because they are both dedicated and competitive. Yet while Daniel deserves much credit for building a powerhouse, TAB is largely responsible for helping him do so with approving trades like this.
I've lightly mentioned that the Pat's were able to secure Gordon for pennies on the dollar after his 1st year in the league...which was due to a supposed under-whelming rookie season that didn't quite stand up to expectations...Now, a year later, Gordon finishes 4th among RB's in ppg. The result, if I may say so without any type of disrespect, was mainly due to TAB failing the Dolphins organistion.
Here, we find much of the same type deal...But will Woodhead, Wheaton and Simon give MORE than what Henry offers?
First, it's highly doubtful Woodhead, at age 32, finishes out his contract.
Second, Wheaton, on a 1-year contract has his work cut out for him. Can he crack the starting line-up, beating out one of White, Wright, or Merideth...not to mention a couple of other potential vying for position?
And finally, we have Simon, who Eagles traded to Pat's earlier. He performed pretty well the 1st half of the season before sitting out the latter half. Will he be the starter or a rotational LB?
In short, it appears Eagles are attempting to step-up and win it all this year, BUT even if they are they're still destined to be starting over. And as for the Patriots? Well...no harm in waiting til DeMarco moves on...he'll have a RB that will more likely be more involved in the offense this year than he was last year, and is just biding his time.
How does a league allow an organisation to become the sole un-challenged powerhouse? By the same token, how does a league allow a bottom-dweller to remain on the bottom?
By looking to the surface of a trade and basing values and/or worth on individual perception.
